The 5AT Engineering Planning Working Party (EPWP) was set up under the Chairmanship of John Hind to co-ordinate and look in-depth at the engineering aspects of the 5AT Project. EPWP holds meetings as and when required and formal minutes are produced. Visits to railway sites are arranged as appropriate to view particular design aspects of heritage locomotives which may be relevant to the 5AT. As with the majority of the Group’s activities day to day communication is via email.
A major task undertaken by the EPWP has been to estimate the costs of designing and developing the 5AT. This has included a detailed assessment of the Project Management and Design Engineering resources needed to develop the demonstrator 5AT locomotive and a rigorous estimate of the costs of building it.
Members of EPWP have also produced the original CAD drawings and stress analyses undertaken as part of the evaluation of Project Feasibility. However this work, which is continuing, has progressed far beyond the scope of work initially envisaged and continues to look at many other aspects relating to the detailed design of the 5AT.
Full members of EPWP include:
Other members of the 5AT Group are co-opted as required.
